The case study

How this staircase came together

  1. Upgrading the staircase with black metal spindles

This black metal spindles staircase upgrade reworked a dated wooden staircase into a sharper, more modern design by swapping the original spindles for sleek black metal balusters and refinishing the rest of the staircase with crisp white paint. The owners wanted a contemporary aesthetic without rebuilding the entire staircase, so the upgrade focused on the visible elements — spindles, paint, and finished details — that produce the biggest visual change for the smallest scope of work.

  2. The work

Our crew carefully removed the original spindles and prepared the rail and stringer for the new black metal balusters. Each baluster was set and fastened individually to maintain consistent spacing and a square, plumb installation across the full length of the railing. The handrail, posts, risers, and stringer were then sanded, primed, and painted modern white, creating a clean light backdrop that lets the dark balusters stand out as the staircase's focal point.

  3. The result

The finished staircase reads as a balanced contrast between contemporary black metalwork and clean white surfaces — durable, visually striking, and consistent with modern interior design throughout the rest of the home. The upgrade preserves the structure of the original staircase while completely changing how it reads in the room.

Questions answered

Staircase renovation questions

How much does a staircase renovation cost?
Staircase work is quoted per project: the price depends on the number of treads and risers, whether the structure needs prep or rebuilding, the species and grade of wood, the railing and picket style, and the number of finish coats. We measure on site and give you a fixed price before work starts.
Do you use your own crew or subcontractors?
Our in-house crew does the work, with a dedicated project manager coordinating the project from start to finish. That is what keeps the finishing consistent across a whole job.
What warranty and insurance do you carry?
A 5-year workmanship warranty in writing, active WSIB clearance and $2M general liability insurance. We provide the certificates condo boards and property managers ask for.
