The case study

How this staircase came together

  1. Renovating this staircase in light wood

This light wood staircase renovation reworked a traditional wooden staircase into a sleek, modern feature that better suits contemporary home interiors. The original staircase was structurally sound but visually dated — heavy stained wood, old-style spindles, and finishes that absorbed light. The renovation focused on the visible elements — treads, handrail, spindles — that produce the biggest aesthetic change for the smallest scope of work.

  2. The work

We removed the original treads and spindles, then installed new light-stained wooden steps with consistent grain matching across the full staircase. The new tone keeps the staircase reading bright and airy instead of heavy, which lets it work as a focal point rather than a visual obstacle. A custom-finished handrail was installed in the same tone, paired with black iron spindles that frame the steps with a clean contemporary line.

  3. The result

The combination of light wood and black iron is now a recognizable contemporary aesthetic — the warmth of the wood paired with the precision of the metalwork — and it suits both modern and transitional interiors. The finished staircase blends seamlessly with the rest of the home and demonstrates how a careful staircase renovation can shift the overall ambiance of the surrounding living space without rebuilding anything structural.

Questions answered

Staircase renovation questions

How much does a staircase renovation cost?
Staircase work is quoted per project: the price depends on the number of treads and risers, whether the structure needs prep or rebuilding, the species and grade of wood, the railing and picket style, and the number of finish coats. We measure on site and give you a fixed price before work starts.
Do you use your own crew or subcontractors?
Our in-house crew does the work, with a dedicated project manager coordinating the project from start to finish. That is what keeps the finishing consistent across a whole job.
What warranty and insurance do you carry?
A 5-year workmanship warranty in writing, active WSIB clearance and $2M general liability insurance. We provide the certificates condo boards and property managers ask for.
