The case study

How this staircase came together

  1. Upgrading the interior staircase in this condo

This condo interior staircase upgrade reworked a builder-standard condo staircase into a refined modern feature that suits the rest of the unit's contemporary interior. Condo staircases are often dated by tone — dark heavy wood that absorbs light in already-small spaces — so the upgrade focused on lightening the steps, swapping spindles for sleek black metal balusters, and producing a staircase that reads as part of the design rather than a leftover from the original build.

  2. The work

We removed the original treads, risers, and spindles, then installed light-toned wooden steps with consistent grain matching across the full run. The new wood tone keeps the staircase reading bright instead of heavy, which makes the surrounding space feel taller and more open. Sleek black metal balusters were set into the new handrail and stringer for a clean, minimalist line — a small change in detailing that completely shifts the staircase's overall aesthetic.

  3. The result

The finished staircase is a contemporary focal point in the condo: light wooden steps grounded by dark metalwork, with a refined handrail and consistent finish throughout. The upgrade pairs naturally with the rest of the condo interior and demonstrates how a focused renovation on one architectural element can change how the whole space reads.

Questions answered

Staircase renovation questions

How much does a staircase renovation cost?
Staircase work is quoted per project: the price depends on the number of treads and risers, whether the structure needs prep or rebuilding, the species and grade of wood, the railing and picket style, and the number of finish coats. We measure on site and give you a fixed price before work starts.
Do I need condo board approval before work starts?
Almost always yes. Most GTA condo corporations require an alteration agreement covering scope, drawings, insurance, WSIB clearance and a worker list. We prepare that package and book the freight elevator on your behalf.
Do you use your own crew or subcontractors?
Our in-house crew does the work, with a dedicated project manager coordinating the project from start to finish. That is what keeps the finishing consistent across a whole job.
What warranty and insurance do you carry?
A 5-year workmanship warranty in writing, active WSIB clearance and $2M general liability insurance. We provide the certificates condo boards and property managers ask for.
