The case study
How this home came together
Renovating a cottage in Niagara-on-the-Lake
This Niagara-on-the-Lake cottage renovation revitalized a charming lakeside retreat with modern updates while carefully preserving the cozy, rustic appeal that makes a Niagara-on-the-Lake property feel like a cottage rather than a small house. The owners wanted contemporary durability and material quality, but did not want the renovation to flatten the character of the original cottage — so the project balances modern updates against intentional preservation of traditional finishes.
The work
Wide-plank engineered hardwood was installed across the main living areas, with traditional trim profiles selected to suit the cottage's existing architectural language rather than a strictly modern aesthetic. Custom-made flush-mount floor vents were milled from the same flooring stock so the vents disappear into the floor surface — a small detail that significantly elevates how the finished floor reads and removes the visual interruption of standard metal vent covers.
The result
The result is a warm, inviting cottage that holds onto its lakeside charm while functioning as a contemporary home. Family gatherings, longer stays, and quiet getaway weekends all work in the same space because the updates are durable and the rustic appeal is intact. The renovation highlights how contemporary design choices, when made carefully, can blend seamlessly with traditional cottage character in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Multi-room remodel
$50,000–$90,000
6–10 weeks on site
Kitchen ($25k–$50k) + main bath ($12k–$22k) + main-floor flooring, coordinated under one schedule. Final quote depends on finishes.

3–5 weeks on site
Custom cabinetry, quartz counters, tile backsplash, appliances, lighting, electrical updates. Above $50,000 is beyond our typical scope.
What moves the number
- Square footage: whole-home work is quoted at $80–$150/sq. ft.
- Whether the kitchen is in scope ($25,000–$50,000 on its own)
- How many bathrooms are rebuilt
- Structural work: removing a load-bearing wall adds engineering and permits
We measure on site and give you a fixed-price proposal before work starts. If your budget and the scope you want do not line up, we will tell you that at the estimate rather than after.
Timeline
